Highways & Co. Puts Traffic Management Front and Center

Ever wished traffic could be the whole game? Highways & Co. answers that wish by removing most of the city building and putting road design under the microscope. If you liked tweaking junctions in Cities Skylines but wanted more time for lane assignments, ramps and priority rules, this is the kind of toy box you have been waiting for.

The loop is simple and satisfying. Build a network, open it to traffic, watch the flows and failures, then keep iterating until the queues disappear. It is a pure focus on solving congestion with powerful, precise tools rather than sculpting districts or zoning.

Build the Road You Want

Highways & Co. gives you more control than a generic road tool. You can create smooth highway ramps and slip roads or choose cheaper at grade solutions like level crossings. Roads are not a one size fits all affair. Choose from multiple road classes, set lane counts independently per direction, and even make asymmetrical layouts such as a 3 plus 2 lane link.

Elevation matters. The game offers seven height levels including cuttings, tunnels and viaducts so you can route traffic over rail or around obstacles. Need a roundabout or a signalised intersection? Both are on the table, along with channelized slip roads and give way junctions. Lane connections and priority controls let you tune exactly how vehicles merge and yield.

Open It to Traffic and See What Happens

When you are ready you flip the network live and let the deterministic simulation run. Every vehicle follows a route and has individual driving behaviour. Traffic merges, changes lanes, forms queues and reacts to the network you built. Each destination in a scenario requires the network to meet a traffic throughput threshold. If a link chokes, you investigate why.

That investigation is the core puzzle. Add capacity, alter connections, convert roads to one way or widen them. You can change a road class or lane count without completely rebuilding the geometry, which keeps the iteration loop fast and encourages experimentation.

Campaign, Features and the Player Experience

Highways & Co. ships with a handcrafted campaign of challenging sites designed around real world style problems. Challenges push you to think about capacity, priority and pinch points rather than aesthetics.

Key technical and gameplay features include

  • Ten road types from country lanes and streets up to four lane motorways
  • Independent lane counts for each direction and asymmetrical layouts
  • Seven elevation levels for tunnels, cuttings and viaducts
  • Signals, roundabouts, give way junctions and channelized slip roads
  • Precise lane connections and priority controls
  • Ability to widen roads, convert them to one way and change class without full rebuild
  • Railways and level crossings to complicate routing options
  • Deterministic traffic simulation so repeat runs behave consistently

For players who enjoy systems puzzles and flow optimisation, this is a focused playground. It rewards careful planning, a willingness to test and iterate, and an eye for how small changes ripple through a network.

Highways & Co. is not about building a skyline. It is about making every vehicle reach its destination without a pile up.
