Beneath the Permafrost: Can You Cheat Death in an Eternal Blizzard?
The world has ended, but the storm did not. In Beneath the Permafrost you step into a city locked under an endless blizzard, a place where cold is not just uncomfortable, it is the enemy. The dead linger as husks, reality itself is starting to crack, and there is a single rumor of salvation: the Fountain.
Survival here is razor thin. Scavenge for supplies, choose what to carry and what to leave, light a match to buy a few more moments, and aim true when the husks come for you. The lives of your family depend on whether you find the Fountain or become another marker beneath the ice.
A Fractured City and a Dire Goal
Aurburg is not a city so much as a puzzle of ruined streets, collapsed buildings and frozen alleys. The environment is designed to disorient as much as to threaten, forcing you to use your map and your wits to pick routes that conserve heat and time.
There is a clear objective, but getting there is the hard part. Reach the Fountain, and you might defy death for your loved ones. Fail and the storm will do what it has done to so many before, burying you under the permafrost.
Fear the Cold
Cold is the clock in this game. Time is always running while the blizzard bites, and temperature management is more than a meter on a HUD. You make fires, find pockets of rest and push deeper into Aurburg when the brief warmth allows it. Each flame is both a refuge and a resource you cannot waste.
This is survival that leans on tension rather than on constant action. The choice to rest, to move on, or to light another match can be the difference between progress and a frozen grave.
Manage Resources Carefully
Scavenging drives the loop. Abandoned shops and apartments hold food, ammo, and fragile comforts. Inventory space is limited, forcing hard decisions about what to tote through the storm. Matches are precious, bullets are scarce, and every item has a weight in your long term plan.
Planning matters. When to use that last round, or whether to burn a match to warm a scared companion, creates a steady pressure that keeps each moment meaningful. There is no hoarding solution that will save you forever.
Fight for Your Life
Not all threats here are environmental. The husks are the living dead of this frozen world, desperate to take the heat and life of the living. Weapons will stop them temporarily, but the narrative warns that only one thing can permanently end their misery. That ambiguity raises the stakes for exploration and discovery.
Combat looks to be tense and consequential. Every bullet counts, and engaging the wrong fight at the wrong time could cost the warmth you need to survive the next stretch.
Survival Is a Series of Choices
Beneath the Permafrost is less about spectacle and more about the slow burn of survival. Use the map, plan routes through the fractured town, scavenge smart and respect the cold. The game promises a tight interplay between resource management, navigation and combat where small mistakes accumulate.
Will you reach the Fountain and cheat death, or will Aurburg become your tomb? In a world where even reality is starting to crack, those are the only stakes that matter.
