KAGERO: A Vengeful Samurai Fantasy

KAGERO drops you into a samurai fantasy where the dead do not stay dead. You fight solo or with friends to destroy the houses that tried to erase you, harvest the souls of the fallen and fuel a ritual to awaken an ancient spirit. It is a loop built on small-scale expeditions, tight third-person combat and the unusual twist of recruiting your enemies as allies.

Shadow Recruits: Turn Enemies into Allies

The core hook is simple and elegant. When you defeat an enemy you can raise their shadow to fight alongside you. A spearman remains a spearman, a heavy fighter retains heavy strikes, and a standard soldier keeps their patterns. Recruits join immediately as you capture camps, turning cleared areas into walking reinforcements for the next skirmish.

Between runs you can keep selected recruits. The lobby lets you train those shadows to improve vitality, power or mobility, and you pick up to three companions for your next expedition. That meta progression creates a growing tactical layer: do you build a frontline of heavies, a mobile spear unit or a mix that covers gaps in your own kit?

Camp Assaults and Expedition Flow

Expeditions unfold as a series of encounters and capture points. Between waves you assault enemy camps: clear defenders from the flag, stay in the capture zone to raise it and fight off reinforcements. If an enemy enters the circle the capture stalls, forcing you to balance offense and defense while keeping momentum.

Collect souls and choose upgrades during each expedition. Items and abilities appear as choices along the route, letting you strengthen existing techniques or add new tools. That system ties the moment-to-moment fighting with longer-term progression, so each successful assault feels meaningful.

Abilities, Combat Rhythm and Builds

Combat centers on katana play with chaining attacks and well-timed dodges. You can counter some attacks and must evade others, especially when multiple opponents try to surround you. The game encourages spatial awareness as much as combo execution.

Techniques unlock during runs and offer variety: dash options, an area dragon breath, or a lightning counter are examples of the kinds of abilities you can add. Choosing which techniques to take shapes how a run feels, and upgrading them between expeditions changes your role in a party or solo.

Co-op, Split-Screen and Teamplay

KAGERO supports solo play, online co-op for up to four players and split-screen for two. Cooperative play blends individual progression with shared fights: revive fallen teammates, coordinate assaults on camps, or assign one player to hold the flag while others intercept reinforcements. Each player chooses their own camp rewards, so teamwork comes from complementary abilities rather than shared loot.

Since you can recruit and keep shadows across runs, co-op also becomes a place to experiment with different team compositions and synergies. That makes repeated expeditions feel less repetitive and more like a campaign of tactical refinement.

KAGERO mixes satisfying melee combat with an intriguing recruitment mechanic and a clear expedition loop. If you like action games that reward both reflexes and planning, it looks worth watching.
