Abyss of Kings: Underground Chess and Ring Magic

You tumble down a mountain chasm and land in a buried world where ruins swallow the light and chess pieces have learned how to think. Abyss of Kings is a dark-fantasy action-adventure inspired by the Kingsfield series that asks you to navigate a semi-linear, handcrafted underground and escape the Abyss.

The pitch is compact and distinct. Explore sprawling caverns and sunken structures, face armies of sentient chess pieces, and collect rings of power that let you bend weaponry and magic to your will. Along the way you will meet the last inhabitants of a dead kingdom and decide how your story ends.

Unique Chess Combat

Combat is the headline act here. The enemies are literal chess pieces - over 45 different types are promised - and they do not simply stand in for standard monsters. They march, form formations, and execute evolving strategies that force you to think about positioning, timing, and resources.

You will face them in varied arenas and under pressure. Their tactics can shift, their magic can change the battlefield, and boss encounters punctuate the descent with higher-stakes puzzles in motion. The game gives you familiar tools - a sword, a crossbow, and a magical amulet - but the way those tools interact with enemy formations and the ring system is where choices matter.

Rings and Spellcraft

Rings of power are a central customization loop. Found throughout the caverns, these rings can enhance attacks, modify weapons, and be combined to create bespoke spells. The emphasis is on experimentation - slot different rings together and discover synergies that suit your approach, whether you prefer close combat, ranged suppression, or strange utility magic.

That modularity suggests combat will reward creativity as much as reflexes. Instead of a fixed skill tree, your loadout and spellcraft evolve through discovery and tinkering, giving each run into the depths a chance to feel new.

The Underground, NPCs and Secrets

The world is semi-linear and handcrafted, full of ruins and secrets. At first the underground seems empty, but glimmering eyes and shadowed figures hint that you are not alone. Talk to various characters to uncover pieces of the kingdom's story and influence how your escape plays out. Multiple endings and many hidden areas promise replay value for players who love exploration.

Abyss of Kings also leans on atmosphere. There are bossfights, varied arenas, and an original soundtrack by Narbaiz to set tone and tension. The game is built around discovery - from hidden treasures to the shifting tactics of your chess opponents.

Made Mostly By One Person

Abyss of Kings is primarily the work of Nanda, who says they are creating the bulk of the game solo. Composer Narbaiz provides the original score, and a group of friends and collaborators contribute features, feedback, and support. Publisher Spelkollektivet backs the project and, according to the developer, respects their creative choices.

Nanda's message is simple and earnest: this is a personal project meant to take players on a journey through a strange underground world. Between crafted level design, chess-inspired combat, ring-based customization, and an emphasis on atmosphere, Abyss of Kings looks to be a thoughtful tribute to classic dark-fantasy exploration with its own oddball twist.
