Duola Mage: Cute, crisp combat with surprising depth

Duola Mage sells itself on doing one thing very well. Instead of the usual high-speed chaos where effects and characters blur into a mess, the game makes every movement and attack legible. The result is an action game that feels deliberate, responsive, and stylish, wrapped in a distinctly kawaii aesthetic.

Combat is the headline here, but there is more under the hood. The demo gives you a taste of multiple playable characters, a roguelike Trials ladder, and a wide selection of weapons that all come with unique skills you can match to your favorite class.

Combat that feels solid and intentional

The developers call Duola Mage a retro action game that avoids the "everything at once" approach. That design choice shows in how attacks land and how you read a fight. Spells, slashes, and summons are meant to read clearly on-screen so you can time counters and combos instead of guessing which hit connected.

Weapon variety is a big pillar. Greatswords, katanas, bows, staves, and gauntlets each have their own special skills. According to the materials, every weapon has a unique skill, and you can upgrade them. The demo lets you try equipment freely, so you can experiment with how weapon skills change a character's role in combat.

Swap characters on the fly, and actually feel the difference

One of Duola Mage's promises is that switching characters is more than cosmetic. You can field multiple characters simultaneously and switch between them during battles. The roster highlights distinct playstyles:

  • Izumi Nao - Samurai: precision and timing, with dash slashes and single-motion draws.
  • Bella - Mage: fragile but excels at crowd clear with abilities like Black Hole and Meteor.
  • Andrew - Druid: transforms into a werewolf, summons storm eagles, and blends nature with raw power.
  • Lucian - Elf Archer: agile movement and powerful precision shots like Dragon Arrow.
  • Deca - Phoenix: fire dragons and flame-based attacks for wide area damage.
  • Disi - Descendant of the Valkyrie: a heavy hitter who faces dragons head on.

The team says they worked to make each character feel unique beyond particle effects, so switching can change your tactical options rather than only your look.

Levels, exploration, and the Trials ladder

Duola Mage's world is built out of themed dungeons that encourage exploration. Maps include environments such as a tree spirit forest, a primeval desert, lava pits, and misty spider nests. Developers mention hidden bosses, chests, and climbable buffs that reward curiosity.

There is some inconsistency in the materials about total level counts. In one description the team lists 11 main story levels, while a separate level summary refers to 10 main levels, plus a roguelike ladder and solo boss levels. The demo itself limits access but still aims to showcase the structure of main quests and Trial progression.

The Trials mode is the roguelike backbone. Floors grow harder, and after each round you pick one of three buffs. Scenes shift every three levels with a random boss thrown in, which keeps runs varied. The game also plans a Trials leaderboard where high-floor players can earn special titles.

Weapons, crafting, and progression

Crafting is central to progression. Equipment and upgrades come through forging so players are not strictly dependent on rare drops. The developers highlight more than a hundred weapons. A few named examples and their skills include:

  • Zantari Crystal Sword - Weapon Skill Adrian's Moonlight
  • Holy Light's Sanctuary Bow - Weapon Skill Faith Rune, Passive Faith Holy Light Arrow
  • Blood Sacrifice Greatsword - Weapon Skill Blood Altar, Passive Blood Mark
  • Skull Frost Staff - Weapon Skill Summon Ice Dragon, Passive Frost Orb
  • Andreophis Warblade - Weapon Skill Demon Eye Prism, Passive Demon's Grip

These weapon skills can be mixed and matched with different characters, offering creative loadouts and playstyles.

Cosmetics, accessories, and multiplayer plans

Cosmetics are robust. The project lists about 200 outfits across genders, weapon skins, equipment skins, and back accessories. Back accessories double as functional unlocks, granting skills such as Ogre's Roar, Sword Control, or Snow Fox Agility.

Multiplayer is noted as coming soon, so the demo focuses on single-player systems. The current build still removes restrictions on outfits and equipment so you can try combinations freely.

Demo specifics and what you can try right now

The trial build opens a focused slice of the game to test core systems:

  • Two story levels are available in the demo.
  • Trial ladder is accessible up to floor 15.
  • One boss challenge level is included.
  • There are no restrictions on outfits or equipment in the demo.

Other content mentioned in the full materials that is not present in the trial includes a larger set of levels and additional solo boss challenges. Expect the demo to show combat, character switching, weapon skills, and Trials pacing rather than the full campaign.

Why give the demo a go

If you enjoy action games where every input matters and character identity is clear, Duola Mage is worth a look. Its emphasis on readable combat, deep weapon-skill synergies, and swappable characters creates a mix that is both approachable and mechanically rich. The demo provides a neat playground for testing builds and seeing how weapon skills and characters interact before committing to longer runs.

Duola Mage is cute on the surface but designed with systems players can sink teeth into. The trial won't show everything, but it should make the combat loop and customization hooks clear from the first run.

Duola Mage's demo is now on Steam, letting you dive into a kawaii adventure action game with elegant art, passionate battles, multiple characters with unique class skills, a satisfying roguelike ladder, and a main quest of search, fight, and collect tasks.

Currently it's not available in english, but we are sure the developers will add that in the future, as many things already have been translated into english.
