You signed the lease, grabbed the keys, and moved into a pleasant new place. Management left a polite note: there is basement access, but basement access is not recommended. Bad House takes that setup and turns it into a tidy little horror-meets-loot loop - an auto-battler dungeon crawler where rooms, monsters and gear wait below.
The property comes partially furnished. The previous tenant left knives, wands, amulets, rings, swords, shields, armors and other useful possessions. You can pick them up, stash them in your upstairs storage box, and return later if you want. Just know that basement access points are fragile and may not remain available after use. Oh, and if you hear strange noises, try to pretend you didn't.
Bad House revolves around exploration of many rooms in a mysterious basement. The rules are simple and ominous: there are plenty of things to take, the storage upstairs is available throughout your tenancy, and most people never come back up. That last part is... informative.
The basement is home to a motley local community - demons, skeletons, bats, the undead and numerous unidentified occupants. Respecting personal space is suggested but not required if you're trying to survive. Management is explicit that they are not responsible for items abandoned in the basement, so the risk-reward loop is baked in: go deep, gather better gear, and ferry treasures back to storage before the access closes.
Combat in Bad House is built on auto-battler foundations. You do not manually micro every attack; instead, you assemble and equip your character, choose abilities and let encounters resolve with strategic positioning and build choices. The house hands you choices between different tenant archetypes.
Choose Blake if you want to swap between melee and magic on the fly. Pick Rory to lean into blood magic and critical hit synergies. Or slip into Lou's boots to blend into shadows and coat targets in poison. Gear matters - rings, amulets and weapons you find downstairs change how those archetypes behave - and returning valuables to your personal storage makes those choices persist run to run. Because basement access can break after use, every decision about whether to secure an item upstairs is meaningful.
Tonewise, Bad House is equal parts eerie curiosity and mechanical clarity. The design teases exploration - there are many rooms, and each one may hide a useful piece of equipment or a lethal surprise. The auto-battler structure keeps runs relatively quick while still rewarding thoughtful planning about builds, item management and when to press your luck.
If you like dungeon crawlers with a clever hook and inventory-driven progression, the premise here is appealing: a domestic front that hides an unruly, monster-filled economy below. And yes, you should absolutely consider leaving the lights on.
