Silent Orbits
You fell asleep on a research mission in 2089 and woke up 300 years later. The solar system is a graveyard of armed, decaying hardware and vanished colonies. Silent Orbits is a text-driven, narrative-rich sci-fi cRPG that asks one stubborn question: did humanity destroy itself, or did everyone else leave?
The game leans into the moody, tactical exploration that classic isometric RPGs embraced, but swaps the sprites for dense, hard sci-fi interactive fiction. You pilot the UNSF Raven, pick over derelicts, fight turn-based battles, and let narrative choices guide you into the mystery of The Echo.
Explore a Fallen Solar System
Silent Orbits uses two layered map systems. A broad 2D sector map guides long-range travel across the ruined system. Inside each sector you switch to a smaller grid map that feels very Fallout 1 and 2-ish: fog of war, tile-by-tile travel, and random encounters. These smaller maps are where scavenging, conversations, and environmental puzzles happen.
You will scan for drifting outposts, pry open shattered stations, and loiter in asteroid fields looking for raw materials. Every location can hold memory drives, fragments of lost logs, or lethal security drones. The game leans on atmosphere. Text descriptions and item lore do a lot of the heavy lifting to sell the uncanny, dead-tech mood.
Grid Combat and Tactical Choices
Combat is turn-based and centered around your ship and pilot upgrades. The Raven is modular and sits on a 10-slot foundation grid. You can fit turrets, generators, batteries, shields, and heavier combat modules as you scavenge blueprints and parts. Battles reward planning and the right modules more than twitch reactions.
Beyond tactical fights, Silent Orbits keeps decisions meaningful. Stats and prior choices shape negotiation and trade outcomes, and hacking terminals or decoding memory drives opens alternate routes through encounters. You can talk, bargain, or bluff your way past some dangers, while others will demand raw firepower.
The UNSF Raven, Crafting, and Inventory
Your ship and gear are your lifeline. The Raven's modular system forces tradeoffs. Do you slot in a bigger shield at the cost of firepower? Do you carry more raw materials at the expense of a heavy combat module? Inventory is grid-based, so spatial management matters for both crew gear and components.
Crafting is central. Salvage asteroids and derelicts for resources, unlock blueprints, and build new tools and ship modules. You can install heavy modules to change how the Raven fights, or craft tools that make exploration safer. The game also invites small roleplaying touches like talking to your ship and managing Molly's RPG stats to influence social encounters and skill checks.
Combat, Choices, and The Echo
Silent Orbits mixes well-paced tactical combat with interactive fiction that rewards curiosity. Decode the lost drives and you'll get pieces of a civil war played out in log entries and terminal fragments. Solve environmental puzzles, hack the right terminal, and you might avoid bloodshed. Make the wrong call and a derelict's defenses will make you pay.
The tone is mature and unforgiving. Resources are limited, choices have consequences, and every item can be a clue or a crutch. If you like slow-burn mystery, resource management, and careful tactical fights wrapped in rich, atmospheric writing, Silent Orbits looks like it's aiming for that sweet spot.
Wishlist and Watch
Silent Orbits is shaping up to be a thoughtful fusion of classic grid exploration and text-based, hard sci-fi storytelling. If a tactical, narrative-led scavenging sim where you upgrade a modular ship sounds like your kind of salvage run, add it to your wishlist and keep an eye out for more details.
