Project Songbird turns a songwriter's retreat into an Appalachian nightmare

Project Songbird is a cinematic first-person narrative psychological horror game from Conner Rush and FYRE Games, the studio behind Summerland and We Never Left. You play Dakota, a career musician stuck in writer's block who isolates themself in a remote log cabin in the Appalachian forest to finish an album. The quiet doesn't last. According to the developer, these woods were never empty.

The game promises a compact, engrossing experience aimed at 4-5 hours of playtime, with an emphasis on atmosphere, character, and a film-like visual presentation. Exploration shifts between the natural environment and unsettling dreamscapes as Dakota fights to survive a nightmarish journey.

Cinematic visuals and a living soundtrack

Music and sound are central to the concept. The soundtrack is composed and performed by Jacob Noska and Jonah Henthorne of the band Auric Echoes. Given the protagonist's profession as a musician, the game's score and audio design appear to play an active role in shaping mood and narrative beats.

Gameplay - explore, fight, survive

Project Songbird mixes exploration and narrative with combat. The developer notes both ranged and melee combat systems, and weapons can be upgraded to help Dakota survive whatever haunts the woods and the dreamscapes. Beyond the fights, the game emphasizes environmental storytelling and cinematic pacing to keep the tension consistent across its runtime.

This looks to be a shorter, focused horror experience that balances story moments with survival mechanics rather than a sprawling open-world affair.
